Represents muscle ammonia efflux measured during rest and during the 3rd to fourth minute of contraction (this is when a venous blood sample was obtained) and during the first 2 minutes of recovery. Peak ammonia efflux from the muscle occurred during the 2nd period of muscle contraction. During the fourth period of contraction there was no measurable release of ammonia from the muscle tissue. The black bars at the top of the graph represent the period of muscle stimulation.
