  1. Real time RT-PCR analysis was carried out in quadruplicate as described in the Methods. The fold difference was calculated from the indicated mean cycle threshold (Ct) values, the amplification cycle when product can first be detected: lower Ct values correspond to greater abundance. Ct values were normalized to the expression of the housekeeping gene beta-actin (ΔΔCt), and fold difference in mRNA calculated as 2ΔΔCt, as detailed in Methods, with p ≤ 0.05 considered significant.
